Problem Solving
Problem-solving at Shady Oak Primary School is just as important to our school culture as academics; if not more so. We use several research-proven methods to help students move from an opinion to sound critical thinking. At Shady Oak Primary School, we empower effective critical thinkers who understand how to put logic before emotion, possess a healthy level of sound judgment, and function effectively in both the material world and the world of complex ideas.
We believe in the power of persistence, grit, and problem solving.
We believe that there is increased and ensured freedom within consistent and enforceable boundaries.
At our core…
Reflection as a Tool for Problem Solving:
Just like a skilled pilot adjusts their course for a successful journey, Shady Oak Primary embraces adaptability and flexibility. After every planned activity, be it collaborative Project-Based Learning, Friday Feasts, PTA meetings, field trips, Grandparents Day, Student Recognition Ceremonies, Talent Shows, and more, we gather as a community for reflection. This inclusive process involves students and staff sharing thoughts on what worked well, what didn’t, and suggestions for improvements. It empowers our students to practice “voice and choice” highlighting their opinions as valuable contributions to the school community. Witness the incredible sight of 1st and 2nd graders making effective contributions or older students launching their own businesses inspired by reflection time!
Student Empowerment Through Voting:
At Shady Oak Primary, we believe in giving students a voice and a vote in their education. Whether it’s choosing recess activities, science and social studies topics, activities during math and ELA time, games, or art projects, our students actively participate in decision-making. This approach fosters a sense of autonomy, responsibility, and engagement in their learning journey.
Restorative Justice Model for Conflict Resolution:
We understand that problem-solving is as crucial as academics in shaping a positive school culture. Shady Oak Primary employs the Restorative Justice Model to resolve conflicts and find solutions. This model includes one-on-one sessions between experienced students, small group settings with monitoring adults, and even whole-group discussions during staff meetings. Our Restorative Circles provide a safe space for students to express their concerns, with a structured process guided by adults to ensure everyone feels heard and satisfied with the resolution. It’s all about effective communication, problem-solving, and collaboration in our solution-oriented school.
