Communication

Our commitment to purposeful education goes beyond academic excellence. We recognize that successful adults possess strong communication skills. Shady Oak Primary instills in our students the ability to articulate their emotions, fostering control over situations. Through real-time conflict resolution exercises, we teach them the impact of words and the art of reading emotions through body language, crucial skills for navigating the complexities of life.

We cultivate empathy and compassion by showing how individual actions affect others.

We cultivate gratitude and end each day with a compliment circle.

At our core…

Conveying Emotions: Putting words to feelings:

One way to ensure you have control over a situation is to know how to properly communicate your emotions. We teach our kids how to put words to what they’re feeling. The more you can learn how to express to others what you are feeling, the better experience you will have in business situations and in life. We also teach our kids the effect their words can have on each other. We spot conflicts as they are happening. For example, we’ll stop someone and say, “Do you see her face? Do you think she feels good about what you just said or did?”. This teaches them to read body language and connect physical signals to emotional responses.

Presenting Your Best Self: The Art of Effective Communication:

In our unique environment, students regularly engage in speeches, reports, and collaborative problem-solving. Our 3 – 5 graders, in particular, participate in weekly Speech Class, where they not only master the art of public speaking but also learn to think on their feet. This not only instills the ability to present ideas clearly but also encourages quick thinking, opinion sharing, and constructive evaluation—an invaluable skill set for future success. We cultivate empathy and compassion by showing how individual actions affect others.

Project-Based Learning: Fostering Effective Communication:

Our innovative project-based learning approach sets us apart. As students work together to solve real-world problems, they learn the nuances of effective communication. From gauging understanding within a team to presenting ideas coherently, our students develop crucial communication skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
